When you release new music — whether it’s a single, EP, or album — it’s tempting to think success lives and dies on playlists. Did Spotify editorial pick it up? Did it land on Discover Weekly? Did an influencer playlist give you a bump?

These things can help, but they’re not the foundation of a career. Streams don’t automatically translate to fans. The real work — and the real reward — comes from connecting with people who want to follow your journey. That’s where long-term momentum is built.

Why chasing playlists isn’t enough

Pitching to independent third-party playlists can be a valuable way to get your music heard — especially at the top of the funnel where discovery begins. But placements aren’t guaranteed, they don’t last forever, and they can’t be your only strategy. Real growth happens when playlist exposure is paired with consistent storytelling and fan connection, turning casual listeners into long-term supporters.
